A coalition under the banner of Lagos State Prominent Indigenes has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure that the state’s governorship in 2027 is reserved for qualified indigenous candidates, citing the need for fairness, equity, and inclusiveness.
The appeal was made during a technical committee meeting held on March 18, 2026, where the group also expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election for a second term.
Members resolved that key leadership positions in Lagos State—including Governor, Deputy Governor, and Speaker of the House of Assembly—should be occupied by indigenes by 2027.
In a communiqué signed by Convener Adesunbo Onitiri, the group stressed that their position is aimed at promoting equity, preserving local identity, and strengthening stakeholder participation in governance.
Aspirants for the governorship, the communiqué added, must meet clearly defined criteria, including verifiable Lagos ancestry, strong academic and professional credentials, and proven leadership experience in public or private sectors.
The group also highlighted integrity as a key requirement, stating that candidates must have a clean record free from corruption or criminal allegations.
“They must exhibit sound character, discipline, and exemplary personal conduct, with achievements recognized within and beyond Lagos State,” the communiqué said.
Candidates should also demonstrate commitment to societal values, including family responsibility, while showing the ability to lead collaboratively with a focus on transformational governance.
The group further affirmed its readiness to engage with eligible aspirants to identify and support candidates capable of advancing the collective interests and long-term development of Lagos State.
