The Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been hit by a wave of resignations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development followed a tense meeting held over the weekend in Lapai Local Government Area, where dissatisfied members openly challenged the party’s leadership over unresolved internal issues.

During the meeting, party members raised concerns about the credibility of the leadership and the lack of internal democracy within the party.
One of the defectors, Abdullahi Jankara, while addressing issues surrounding the PDP congress and the council election, clarified several disputed matters and acknowledged the widespread anger among members. He expressed disappointment over what he described as the leadership’s failure to honour promises made to loyal members, stating that repeated appeals for reform were ignored, leaving him with no option but to resign.

The aggrieved members also blamed their decision on broader national challenges facing the PDP, noting that ongoing leadership struggles and internal disputes at the national level had weakened accountability and encouraged impunity within state and local party structures.

They further accused the party leadership of marginalising grassroots members during the recent council election, alleging that despite extensive mobilisation at the ward level, major decisions were imposed from above, rendering local structures ineffective.
According to them, the party has become controlled by a few individuals, with little benefit to the wider membership, prompting the mass resignation and calls for change.
