Olubadan: Tinubu, Atiku, others for Ladoja’s Coronation Today

Today, President Bola Tinubu and a host of influential figures will attend the coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan. The ceremony, scheduled for Mapo Hall, is expected to draw former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, governors, ministers and other dignitaries.

Chairman of the Coronation Committee, Chief Bayo Oyero, confirmed that Tinubu and other notable guests will be in attendance. He described the event as more than a traditional installation, saying it underscores the enduring relevance and dignity of Ibadan’s chieftaincy institution.

At the palace in Oke-Aremo, Oyero emphasized that Ladoja’s path to the throne honors a long cultural tradition of orderly succession. He also highlighted that Ladoja brings a wealth of experience, having served as senator, governor, and legislator, and that this background positions him well for kingship.

Ladoja assumes the throne following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakunlehin, whose reign lasted one year. His nomination was earlier approved by Governor Seyi Makinde, paving the way for Friday’s coronation.

Ahead of the ceremony, Gov. Makinde cut short his leave to return to duty and personally oversee the events. The Oyo State House of Assembly formally granted his early resumption in recognition of the cultural significance of the event.

Meanwhile, security has been heightened across Ibadan. The state police announced that in collaboration with other agencies, they will deploy intensified patrols, establish surveillance operations, and enforce movement restrictions near Mapo Hall. Certain roads will be blocked from 7:00 a.m. to ensure smooth access for guests—and the public is advised to use alternative routes.

Markets across Ibadan have already shut down in observance of the event, following directives from traditional leadership urging traders to close their shops and join the coronation activities.
