Amid growing speculation about former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential candidacy in the upcoming presidential election, he held a private meeting with David Mark, the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), on Thursday night. The visit followed the ADC’s First National Caucus meeting in Abuja, where the party was adopted as the coalition’s platform.
Some members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been urging Jonathan to enter the 2027 presidential race against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Having previously served as president before losing to the late President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, Jonathan would be eligible for only one term if he runs and wins.
While the exact purpose of Jonathan’s meeting with Mark remains undisclosed, the two share a history of strong collaboration. Mark, who served as Senate President during Jonathan’s administration, played a key role in enabling Jonathan to assume the role of Acting President during the health crisis of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua through the National Assembly’s “doctrine of necessity.”
