The Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI) in Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to provide a clear transition plan to facilitate the shift from asphalt to concrete road construction nationwide.
At FOCI’s 69th Annual General Meeting in Abuja, President and Chairman-in-Council, Chief Vincent Barrah, praised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for involving FOCI members in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s infrastructure transformation agenda in the Federal Capital Territory and its satellite towns.
Barrah emphasized FOCI’s commitment to delivering high-quality projects that meet global standards but stressed the need for a well-defined plan to adopt concrete roads. “Switching to concrete requires different designs, equipment, and training. Our members are ready, but we need a clear roadmap and sufficient time to adapt,” he said.
He assured that FOCI members possess the expertise, manpower, and equipment to excel in either asphalt or concrete road construction, provided project planning and execution are transparent and fair.
FOCI also urged fair recognition of its contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure, highlighting challenges such as contract administration issues, project re-awarding, unfavorable contract conditions, and payment delays affecting companies and workers.
Barrah noted that FOCI members have built durable roads, some lasting over 40 years, and deserve acknowledgment for their quality work.
Commenting on FCT’s infrastructure progress, Barrah commended Minister Wike for commissioning projects built by FOCI members, contrasting this with other ministries terminating contracts publicly. “We thank the FCT Minister for stabilizing the construction industry and supporting our members, ensuring job security for workers,” he said.
