Osun 2026: INEC urges parties to conduct lawful, transparent primaries

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has urged all political parties in the state to conduct their primaries in strict compliance with the law.

In a statement released on Monday in Osogbo by INEC Public Relations Officer Olurode Musa, Agboke emphasized that adhering to the legal framework is crucial ahead of the 2026 governorship election, which INEC has scheduled for August 8, 2026.

He called on parties to follow the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and the commission’s guidelines to ensure free, fair, and peaceful primaries that truly reflect the choice of party members.

“The commission emphasises that conducting transparent and democratic primaries is key to reducing pre-election litigations, which have often arisen from deviations during primary elections,” he stated.

Agboke also urged political parties to give all aspirants equal opportunities to participate. He highlighted that, according to INEC’s national guidelines, party primaries for the 2026 governorship election in Osun are scheduled to hold between November 24 and December 15.

He assured that the commission is ready to provide the necessary support and guidance to parties to guarantee compliance with the law.

“We call on all stakeholders, including security agencies, to support the Commission in ensuring peaceful and credible party primaries. INEC will continue to monitor party activities and take lawful action against any party that violates electoral regulations,” Agboke added.Headline news
