SOUTH KOREAN PROSECUTORS SEEK 10-YEAR JAIL TERM FOR EX-PRESIDENT YOON

South Korea’s special prosecutors on Friday called for a 10-year prison sentence for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, accusing him of obstructing investigators following his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Authorities allege that in January, Yoon attempted to avoid arrest by barricading himself inside the presidential compound and ordering security measures designed to prevent investigators from executing a warrant.

This is the first time that special prosecutors have formally sought a prison term for the ousted leader, who is facing multiple charges related to the controversial incident, Reuters reported.

Yoon was removed from office earlier this year amid growing legal and political pressure following the failed martial law initiative, which drew widespread criticism and public protests.

The former president has denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that his actions were legal and necessary under the circumstances.

The court is expected to hear further arguments from both prosecutors and defense attorneys before issuing a final verdict.
