Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has urged the Federal Government to immediately halt military cooperation with the United States following reports of US airstrikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Gumi warned that American involvement could worsen Nigeria’s security situation and undermine the country’s sovereignty. While acknowledging that Islam permits fighting terrorism, he argued that such actions must be carried out by what he described as “clean hands.”
He questioned the moral authority of the United States to lead counterterrorism efforts, citing its global military history, and insisted that allowing foreign powers into Nigeria’s security operations was a grave mistake with possible hidden political motives.

Gumi cautioned that turning Nigeria into a theatre of war could attract hostile forces and further destabilise the country. He also warned that US involvement, particularly under claims of protecting Christians, could deepen religious divisions.
According to him, airstrikes alone cannot defeat terrorism, stressing that effective counterterrorism requires strong ground operations. He added that Nigeria should seek military assistance from other countries if necessary, rather than allowing its territory to become a battlefield.
The cleric’s comments have sparked controversy, given his past calls for dialogue with armed groups, and are expected to draw strong reactions from Nigerians.
