NDLEA TASKS STAKEHOLDERS ON ALARMING RISE IN DRUG-RELATED ACTIVITIES IN EDO

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in partnership with the Ayuele Clan Progressive Association, has raised concerns over the growing incidence of drug abuse and cultism in Edo State, calling for stronger collaboration among key stakeholders to address the trend.

The call was made during a one-day symposium held at the weekend, which brought together students from twelve secondary schools across the state. The Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, delivered a detailed presentation highlighting the disturbing increase in drug-related activities and their impact on young people.

Commander Ofoyeju stressed that tackling drug abuse and cultism requires collective responsibility, noting that parents, teachers, community leaders, and relevant institutions all have critical roles to play.

“The fight against drug abuse and cultism is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement. It demands a united effort from every segment of society,” he said while speaking on the theme “Anti-Drug and Cultism Campaign: The Role of Stakeholders.”

The symposium featured a keynote address by CGrace Obakina and was chaired by Mahmud Abdulrazak. Earlier, the President of the Ayuele Clan Progressive Association, Abubakar Momodu, urged participants to take active roles in combating drug abuse and cultism within their communities.

“We must come together as a community to protect our youths and create an environment where they can grow without being exposed to these destructive influences,” Momodu said.

Students from various schools, including Excellence School, Amina Foundation School, Hill Station School, Momodu College, Ayuele Secondary School, Ugheole Secondary School, Unique Child Academy, An-Nur Comprehensive School, Young Intellectual Academy, Ughilde Secondary School, Elate Demonstration School, and Spring Leaders School Aveile, participated actively in an interactive session.

During the question-and-answer segment, students asked insightful questions on how to resist peer pressure, drug abuse, and involvement in cult activities, demonstrating a strong desire to make informed and positive life choices.

The event ended with a shared commitment by participants and organisers to continue advocating for safer communities and stronger youth engagement across Edo State, reinforcing the belief that collective action is essential in safeguarding the future of young people from drug abuse and cultism.
