KANO COMMISSIONER RESIGNS AFTER ABBA’S DEFECTION FROM NNPP, SAYS HE CAN’T SERVE A ‘DERAILED’ GOVERNMENT

The Kano State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Yusuf Kofarmata, has resigned from his position, citing dissatisfaction with the current direction of the state government.

Announcing his decision in a statement shared on his Facebook page, Kofarmata said he could no longer serve under an administration that had strayed from the principles that brought it into office.

“I cannot continue to work under a government that has derailed from the ideology that brought it to power,” he stated.

Kofarmata, a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), said his resignation was taken in good faith and guided by conscience.

His decision comes shortly after Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, formally resigned from the NNPP. The governor attributed his exit to deepening internal crises and prolonged leadership disputes within the party.

Yusuf’s resignation followed a wider political shift, as 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state also stepped down from the NNPP.

In December, supporters of Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano governor and national leader of the NNPP, operating under the Kwankwasiyya movement, had hinted at a possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing it would improve Kwankwaso’s chances in future presidential contests.

Abdullahi Rogo, Director General of the Protocol Directorate at the Kano State Government House, said the proposed defection was in the best interest of the state. He added that appeals had been made to both Yusuf and Kwankwaso to lead their supporters into the ruling APC.

Governor Yusuf met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House on January 19 and officially resigned from the NNPP four days later, on January 23.

Reacting to the development, the NNPP expressed disappointment, describing the governor’s exit as a betrayal of the mandate entrusted to him by voters.

The commissioner’s resignation adds to growing uncertainty over the political future of the state and raises fresh questions about the implications for Yusuf’s second-term ambitions.
