Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Federal Government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to immediately disclose the whereabouts and current health status of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Atiku expressed deep concern over El-Rufai’s prolonged detention and the lack of official communication regarding his condition since his arrest by security operatives.
The former VP described the silence surrounding El-Rufai’s case as “troubling” and inconsistent with democratic norms and the rule of law.
He urged the authorities to:
– Publicly confirm El-Rufai’s exact location and custody status
– Provide verifiable updates on his health and well-being
– Ensure he has unrestricted access to legal representation, family, and medical care
– Uphold his fundamental rights, including presumption of innocence and protection from inhumane treatment
Atiku warned that continued opacity could fuel public suspicion, erode trust in state institutions, and deepen political divisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
He emphasized that even in cases involving serious allegations, the government must demonstrate transparency, fairness, and respect for due process.
The statement comes amid ongoing speculation and conflicting reports about El-Rufai’s situation following his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) and related security agencies.
