NIGERIA POLICE COUNCIL BACKS DISU’S APPOINTMENT, TINUBU TO SWEAR IN NEW IGP WEDNESDAY

The approval clears the path for his formal swearing-in by Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council meeting.

The council meeting, held at the State House, was chaired by the president and attended by Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu. Other top government officials present included George Akume, Nuhu Ribadu, Femi Gbajabiamila, Ibrahim Gaidam, Nyesom Wike, and Head of Service Esther Didi Walson-Jack.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s track record, particularly his leadership of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where the unit gained recognition for effective crime control. Wike also commended him for strengthening security operations in the Federal Capital Territory. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah formally seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.

Tinubu had earlier named Disu acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. The president subsequently convened the Police Council to formalise the appointment before forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.

Disu officially assumed duties as acting IGP at a brief ceremony at the Louis Edet House in Abuja shortly after being decorated by the president.

Before his elevation, the 59-year-old officer served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos. He was promoted to the rank of AIG last year after serving as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and later in the Federal Capital Territory.

A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Disu previously led the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force and held various command positions, including Divisional Police Officer in Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers states. He also oversaw anti-robbery and anti-kidnapping operations in Rivers and commanded the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in multiple states.

During his handover remarks, Disu pledged to prioritise professionalism, accountability, and modern policing strategies in leading the force.
