A suspected Iranian drone strike has reportedly damaged a covert CIA facility located within the United States Embassy complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, even as American and Saudi authorities have not publicly confirmed that an intelligence installation was among the targets.
According to sources, the incident occurred on Monday, March 3, 2026, when a drone struck the embassy compound in Saudi Arabia’s capital.

An internal State Department alert, cited by The Washington Post, stated that the attack “collapsed” part of the station’s roof and “contaminated” the compound with smoke. The facility sustained “structural damage,” while personnel were instructed to “shelter in place.”
There were no immediate reports of injuries among CIA personnel.

One of the drones, described as a primitive Shahed model, reportedly evaded advanced air defence systems over the United Arab Emirates before striking a car park adjacent to the consulate. The area had been evacuated beforehand, officials said.
In a related development, two Iranian ballistic missiles struck Al-Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East, located in Qatar. No casualties were reported from that attack.

The scale and coordination of Iran’s response to US-Israeli bombardment — which began on Saturday with the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — have reportedly surprised officials in Washington.
US President Donald Trump acknowledged in interviews that the United States did not anticipate Tehran would retaliate against Gulf states not directly involved in the campaign but hosting American military assets.

The CIA has long been regarded by Iran’s Islamic regime as a principal adversary, due in part to its history of covert operations targeting Tehran’s leadership. The agency, alongside the United Kingdom’s MI6, played a central role in the 1953 Iranian coup d’état that overthrew the country’s democratically elected government.

The reported strike also comes amid claims that US intelligence officials have been working with Kurdish militants inside Iran in an effort to foment unrest following Khamenei’s death. The report said it had contacted the CIA for comment.

Senior White House officials are reportedly engaged in discussions with Kurdish leaders in Iraq regarding possible military support. Iranian Kurdish militants are said to maintain thousands of fighters along the Iraq-Iran border, with significant backing in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq.
Despite confirmation of drone strikes on the embassy complex, US authorities have remained publicly silent on whether a CIA facility was directly targeted, leaving key aspects of the incident unaddressed.
