Millions of mourners have poured into the streets of Tehran and other Iranian cities in an extraordinary show of grief and defiance as the coffin of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was carried through a massive funeral procession following his death in the escalating Middle East conflict.

Black-clad crowds filled major boulevards, chanting prayers and holding portraits of the late leader as the flag-draped coffin moved slowly through the sea of mourners. Iranian state media described the turnout as one of the largest public gatherings in the country’s modern history, with people traveling from across Iran to participate in the farewell ceremony.

The three-day state funeral began in Tehran at the Imam Khomeini Prayer Hall, where citizens were allowed to pay their final respects before the procession carried the body through the capital. Religious leaders led solemn prayers as mourners waved Iranian flags and chanted religious slogans while accompanying the coffin.

Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s second Supreme Leader, died on February 28 during a wave of strikes linked to the widening conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States, a development that has dramatically heightened tensions across the Middle East.

Observers say the massive turnout reflects both deep devotion among supporters and the symbolic power of public mourning in Iran’s political culture.

In Shia tradition, funeral processions often become powerful expressions of collective identity and resistance, drawing millions into the streets in displays of solidarity.

The funeral procession is expected to continue with additional ceremonies before Khamenei is buried in Mashhad, the holy city where he was born. Authorities have declared a national mourning period while religious gatherings continue across the country.

Across Tehran, helicopters hovered above the crowds while security forces struggled to manage the enormous turnout as mourners pressed forward to catch a final glimpse of the coffin.

Many carried black banners, while others recited verses from the Qur’an as the procession moved slowly through the capital.

For many Iranians, the funeral marks the end of a defining era in the Islamic Republic’s history.

The scale of the procession, reminiscent of the massive funerals of revolutionary figures in Iran’s past, underscores the deep political and religious symbolism surrounding the late leader’s legacy.

As night fell over Tehran, the crowds remained, continuing their prayers and chants in a vigil that has transformed the capital into a city of mourning.

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn.

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

“Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.”
