FG LAUNCHES NERD DIGITAL PLATFORM TO VERIFY AND PRESERVE ACADEMIC RECORDS, MAKES IT MANDATORY FOR NYSC

The Federal Government has commenced full implementation of the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD), a comprehensive digital platform designed to standardize, verify, digitize, and securely preserve academic records across all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The initiative aims to eliminate certificate fraud, boost the credibility of Nigerian qualifications both locally and internationally, and create a transparent, data-driven education ecosystem.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the rollout during the 2026 National Capacity Building Programme on the NERD Policy held in Abuja on Thursday, March 5, 2026. The event, themed “Strengthening Institutional Compliance and Academic Records Integrity,” underscored the government’s push for transparency, data ownership, and the eradication of academic malpractice.

“NERD is a strategic national infrastructure that will secure, digitize, and authenticate academic records across post-secondary and tertiary institutions nationwide,” Alausa stated. The platform includes key features such as the assignment of unique National Credential Numbers, the National Credential Verification Service, a National Students Clearing House, and a centralized repository for academic publications.

According to the minister, within just four months of enforcement, the platform has digitized nearly 100,000 student submissions. Over 350 universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education have been onboarded, enabling real-time credential verification.

More than 133,000 students and 6,800 lecturers have enrolled, supported by over 665 designated focal officers across the country.

The NERD initiative has also spurred economic benefits, with the establishment of 1,060 Digital Service Centres in partnership with Nigerian digital entrepreneurs, creating over 3,000 jobs.

To promote academic excellence, Dr. Alausa announced the introduction of the NERD Annual National Laureate Prize and Awards Programme. The awards will recognize outstanding undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses with cash prizes ranging from ₦5 million to ₦20 million. The inaugural edition is scheduled for November 2026.

Compliance with the NERD system is now compulsory for eligibility to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Relevant regulatory agencies—including TETFund, NUC, NBTE, NCCE, and ITF—have been directed to enforce the policy strictly.

Institutions complying with NERD will receive 40 percent of the revenue generated from credential verification services.

“The future of Nigerian education is data-driven, transparent, and digitally verifiable,” Alausa emphasized. “Through NERD, future generations will inherit immutable and inviolable records. I urge all administrators to fully embrace this reform so that our graduates’ credentials are trusted and globally competitive.”

The platform marks a significant step toward modernizing Nigeria’s education sector and addressing long-standing issues of fake certificates and verification delays.
