The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that President Bola Tinubu has authorized the recruitment of 50 medical doctors and 100 nurses to serve in hospitals across the nation’s correctional centres.

Speaking in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Tunji-Ojo highlighted the shortage of medical personnel in some facilities, noting that the hospital in the River State correctional centre currently lacks a medical doctor. He added that some centres, such as Kuje, are equipped to perform major surgeries.

The minister also detailed ongoing efforts to train inmates through “train-the-trainer” programs, skills audits, and capacity-building initiatives. He noted that the president has increased inmates’ feeding allowance by 50 percent as part of broader welfare improvements.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of publicizing the achievements of the Ministry of Interior, including collaborations with the Ministry of Solid Minerals to secure minefields, which have contributed to reducing crime and enhancing the protection of critical national assets.
