U.S. President Donald Trump has distanced the United States from a recent Israeli airstrike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, saying Washington had no prior knowledge of the operation.
In a statement shared on social media, Trump said Israel acted independently, describing the strike as a reaction to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. He stressed that the United States was not involved in the attack and also clarified that Qatar had no role or prior awareness of the incident.
According to him, the situation escalated further when Iran, unaware of these details, launched a retaliatory strike on gas infrastructure linked to Qatar, an action he described as unjustified.
Trump warned that Israel would not carry out further attacks on the South Pars field unless Iran continues to target Qatari assets. However, he issued a strong caution that any additional strikes by Iran on Qatar’s energy facilities could trigger a major U.S. military response.
He said the United States, with or without Israel’s involvement, would respond decisively if Qatar’s liquefied natural gas infrastructure is attacked again, although he noted that he would prefer to avoid such escalation due to its potential long-term consequences.
Meanwhile, Qatar confirmed that parts of its gas infrastructure were hit, with reports of fires and significant damage at key facilities. The South Pars/North Dome field, jointly shared by Iran and Qatar, is the largest natural gas reserve in the world and plays a critical role in global energy supply.
The crisis has already impacted global markets, with oil and liquefied natural gas prices rising sharply amid fears of supply disruptions. There has been no immediate official response from Israel or Iran regarding Trump’s remarks.
