The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has deployed a Mobile Control Tower at Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following a fire that damaged key air-ground communication systems at the old terminal.

During an on-site inspection, NAMA’s Director of Safety Electronics and Engineering Services, Terese Ihenacho, described the deployment as a major operational milestone, reflecting the agency’s commitment to safe and efficient air navigation at Nigeria’s busiest airport. She praised the technical expertise and dedication of NAMA personnel, who ensured the tower was fully operational and ready for use.

The Mobile Control Tower has been reconfigured to meet Nigeria’s specific operational needs, integrating local innovations to improve efficiency and safety. A smart strip system now complements traditional manual strips, and seamless connectivity has been established with Centrex and TRACON, enhancing overall operational coordination.

NAMA plans to deploy a second Mobile Control Tower for Runway 18R, with its positioning determined collaboratively with key stakeholders, including air traffic controllers, NCAA, FAAN, and NiMet, to ensure optimal safety.
The deployment is part of NAMA’s broader contingency strategy to maintain air traffic operations during infrastructure upgrades or environmental disruptions. The agency has also implemented critical support systems at the site, including solar-powered lighting, reinforced structures, additional power supply, and comprehensive CCTV security coverage.

Ihenacho highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the welfare and working conditions of staff at the temporary facility, describing NAMA personnel as “heroes” for their tireless work under challenging conditions. She emphasized that the successful deployment of the Mobile Control Tower demonstrates the agency’s dedication to the safety and efficiency of Nigerian airspace.
