Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway is set to give a rare interview addressing her past contacts with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The broadcast, recorded with Crown Prince Haakon at their Skaugum residence, comes as her son, Marius Borg Høiby, nears the conclusion of his rape trial at Oslo District Court.
The 29-year-old Høiby faces 40 charges, including four counts of rape, serious assault, drug-related offences, and traffic violations. His defence team has argued that he should only be convicted for offences he has admitted, which include transporting marijuana and breaching a restraining order. Prosecutors have requested a sentence of seven years and seven months, while the verdict from the three judges is expected in June.
Although not a royal, Høiby has grown up alongside the royal family, and his trial has placed intense scrutiny on the monarchy. The scandal was compounded when hundreds of emails from 2011 to 2014 surfaced, revealing Mette-Marit’s awareness of Epstein’s criminal past and visits to his Palm Beach residence. Her health has also been a concern, as she battles pulmonary fibrosis, which has prevented her from attending certain official engagements. Meanwhile, two organisations she patronised have ended collaborations, and others have demanded explanations regarding her past connections.
The episode comes amid wider scrutiny in Norway, with an independent parliamentary inquiry approved to examine links between the foreign ministry and Epstein, reflecting growing concerns over public trust and accountability.
