Ahead of the 2027 general elections, internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party have intensified, as key political figures continue consultations outside the party’s warring blocs.
Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed recently held a series of high-level meetings with prominent politicians, including Seriake Dickson, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi.
The meetings, which took place in Bauchi and later in Kano, were officially linked to Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. However, insiders suggest they were part of broader political consultations ahead of the next presidential election, especially as reconciliation talks within the PDP appear to have stalled.

Rising Internal Tensions
The PDP has been grappling with a prolonged leadership crisis, which has split the party into rival factions. One bloc is aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while the other is backed by a group of governors and party stakeholders.
The crisis deepened after a convention held in Ibadan last year by the governors’ faction produced a new leadership team. However, the outcome was later nullified by the Court of Appeal, which ruled that the process violated relevant laws and party regulations.
Following the judgment, the Wike-backed faction maintained control through a caretaker committee, insisting that it remains the legally recognised leadership of the party.
War of Words
The situation has since escalated into a war of words between both camps.
Makinde openly criticised any alliance with Wike’s group, claiming that such a move would amount to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election. According to him, Wike had allegedly pledged to deliver the PDP in favour of the ruling party.
On the other hand, Bala Mohammed adopted a more conciliatory tone, stressing that no political disagreement is beyond resolution and reaffirming ongoing efforts to reconcile aggrieved members.

Meanwhile, spokespersons of both factions have traded accusations. The Wike-aligned camp alleged that the governors’ group is attempting to disrupt the party’s upcoming national convention, while the opposing side dismissed the claims as blackmail and insisted it remains committed to peace talks.
Strategic Meetings Raise Questions
The presence of figures like Kwankwaso and Obi at the Kano meeting has sparked speculation about possible political realignments ahead of 2027.
Although no official details were disclosed, sources indicate that discussions may include coalition-building, electoral strategies, and potential alliances beyond the PDP.
The gathering also coincided with the Dandalin Kwankwasiyya, a major political event that attracts supporters and stakeholders from across the country, providing a platform for informal consultations.
Uncertain Path Forward
Despite public assurances from both sides about reconciliation, recent developments suggest that divisions within the PDP remain unresolved.
With the party’s national convention approaching and legal battles still ongoing, its ability to present a united front ahead of the 2027 elections is increasingly uncertain.
For now, the series of high-level meetings and behind-the-scenes negotiations point to a shifting political landscape, where alliances may be redrawn as key players position themselves for the next electoral contest.
