EL-RUFA’I DOCKED IN KADUNA COURT AMID TIGHT SECURITY, PROTESTERS DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY

Tension gripped Kaduna on Tuesday as former Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i was arraigned before the Federal High Court amid heavy security deployment, while protesters simultaneously mounted pressure for his investigation and prosecution.

El-Rufa’i arrived at the court premises at about 9:00 a.m. in a Hilux vehicle under tight security and remained inside for over 30 minutes before being escorted into the courtroom at approximately 9:34 a.m. He was dressed in a light green babanriga with a matching cap, flanked by armed operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), who formed a protective cordon around him.

Security presence around the court, located near the old Nigerian Defence Academy, was extensive. Operatives of the DSS, Nigeria Police Force, Mobile Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were deployed in large numbers. Vehicular movement was heavily restricted, forcing motorists into a single lane from the Ungwan Sarki axis through Kawo, resulting in significant traffic disruption.
Journalists who arrived as early as 7:00 a.m. were denied access to the courtroom by DSS operatives, further underscoring the sensitivity of the proceedings.
Simultaneously, a group of concerned Kaduna residents staged a protest at the court premises, demanding accountability from the former governor. Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “El-Rufa’i Must Be Jailed” and “Justice for Kaduna Citizens,” the protesters accused the former administration of financial mismanagement, mass dismissal of workers, and controversial demolitions that allegedly displaced thousands.

The demonstrators insisted their action was driven by a demand for justice rather than political motives, stressing that governance must remain subject to scrutiny even after tenure.

10-counts charges against the former governor of kaduna State. This is insanely serious!

The arraignment follows an earlier announcement by the ICPC confirming that El-Rufa’i would be charged alongside one Joel Adoga in suit number FHC/KD/73/2026.
According to the commission’s Head of Media and Public Communications, John Odey, the charges include alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.

In addition, a separate case has been filed before a Kaduna State High Court against El-Rufa’i and another individual, Amadu Sule.
The charges in that suit include abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.
Both charges were filed on March 18, 2026, with the date for arraignment in the state court yet to be announced.
The ICPC maintained that the former governor had been duly served and reaffirmed its commitment to due process and the rule of law.

El-Rufa’i’s arraignment comes after weeks of mounting pressure from various stakeholders. Political actors, including members of the African Democratic Congress, had earlier demanded either his immediate release or formal arraignment, describing his continued detention without charges as unconstitutional.
Civil society voices, including the Muslim Rights Concern, as well as members of his family, also raised concerns over alleged rights violations during his detention.

The former governor was initially detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 16, 2026, granted bail two days later, and subsequently re-arrested by the ICPC, remaining in custody until his arraignment.

Legal observers note that while public protests reflect growing civic engagement, the matter now firmly rests within the judicial system. They emphasize that the charges must be tested in court based on evidence, ensuring that both accountability and the rights of the accused are upheld.

The unfolding developments mark a significant moment in Kaduna’s political and legal landscape, highlighting rising public demand for post-tenure accountability, while placing the judiciary at the center of determining the facts behind the allegations.

The National Patriots note that accountability must be pursued with discipline, not emotion. While citizens have the right to demand answers, due process must remain supreme. Justice must neither be rushed nor politicised. Nigeria’s strength lies in institutions that are firm, fair, and transparent—ensuring that both the accused and the public receive justice grounded in law, not sentiment.
