NDC DEFENDS INEC REGISTRATION, CITES COURT ORDER, DUE PROCESS

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has affirmed that its registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was conducted according to due process, citing a Federal High Court order that instructed INEC to list the party.

In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the party addressed concerns raised by Dr. Umar Ardo over the circumstances of its registration.

Enekweizu explained that the NDC first applied for registration in 2017 alongside other associations seeking recognition as political parties. When INEC initially declined the application, citing similarities between NDC’s logo and that of another party, the matter was taken to court. The court ruled that the logos were sufficiently distinct and that denying registration violated the party’s constitutional right to freedom of association. INEC subsequently complied with the court’s directive.

The NDC confirmed that it has since been actively engaging in political activities, including holding its National Executive Committee meetings with prior notice to INEC, which monitored the proceedings. The party has also submitted notifications for upcoming congresses and its national convention.

Enekweizu said members and leaders of the NDC are actively mobilizing citizens across Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to expand the party’s reach. He attributed the growing public interest in the party to its leadership and policy direction.

The NDC emphasized that its formation and operations reflect adherence to constitutional provisions and the rule of law, highlighting its commitment to democratic principles and multiparty participation in Nigeria’s political landscape.
