Nigeria Emerges Africa’s Second-Largest Domestic Air Travel Market — FAAN
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that Nigeria is now the second-largest domestic passenger market in Africa, recording over 10.5 million passengers and a 10 per cent growth.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, disclosed this while speaking at the Airports Council International Africa Regional Conference and Exhibition in Luanda, Angola.

She highlighted that the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos delivered one of the strongest performances in air traffic movements across the continent in 2025, with an 11.8 per cent increase.
In terms of cargo operations, Lagos also ranked among Africa’s leading airports, recording a significant 34.4 per cent growth.
Kuku further noted that both Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos made it into the top 10 airports in Africa for domestic passenger traffic in 2025.

According to her, the figures reflect Nigeria’s growing role in shaping the future of aviation on the continent.
“This sends a very important message: Nigeria is not only preparing to host Africa; Nigeria is also actively participating in shaping the future of African air connectivity,” she said.
She added that the growth in passenger traffic and cargo movement across key airports signals the need for continued modernisation, improved collaboration, and stronger systems to ensure efficiency and resilience in the aviation sector.
