LAGOS 2027: HAMZAT BEGINS CONSULTATIONS, MEETS GAC MEMBERS

Hamzat Begins Early Consultations as Lagos Succession Politics Take Shape

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has commenced early political consultations with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), a move widely seen as the beginning of behind-the-scenes positioning ahead of the 2027 governorship race.

Hamzat confirmed the meeting on Monday via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that discussions centred on the future of Lagos and the kind of leadership required to sustain its development.

“I value the experience and guidance shared. This is about listening, learning and working with others to build a stronger Lagos,” he wrote.

The engagement has drawn attention to the gradual but steady build-up to the next succession cycle in Lagos politics, where the ruling APC typically begins internal consultations long before formal primaries are announced.

The GAC remains one of the most influential political structures within the Lagos APC. The council, chaired by Tajudeen Olusi, brings together party elders and key stakeholders who play a quiet but decisive role in shaping leadership direction, including succession planning and political endorsements.

Although unofficial, the body’s recommendations often carry significant weight in determining who eventually emerges as the party’s preferred candidate.

Hamzat’s visit is being interpreted as part of these long-standing political consultations that define Lagos politics, rather than a formal declaration of ambition. However, it has already sparked conversations within political circles about possible succession alignment within the ruling party.

Some political observers say the consultations reflect early efforts to build consensus among stakeholders ahead of the 2027 race, while others caution that the process is still at a preliminary stage.

A section of political commentary online has also linked the meeting to broader succession narratives, although such claims remain unverified and largely speculative.

For now, the development underscores the quiet but strategic positioning that typically characterises Lagos governorship politics long before the official campaign season begins.
