BENIN’S WADAGNI WINS PRESIDENCY BY LANDSLIDE

Wadagni Wins Benin Presidency in Landslide Victory

Benin’s Finance Minister, Romuald Wadagni, has emerged as the country’s next president after securing an overwhelming majority in the latest election.

According to provisional results released by the electoral commission, Wadagni won more than 94 percent of the vote, with about 90 percent of ballots counted—enough to make his victory virtually certain.

The 49-year-old was widely seen as the frontrunner, especially after the main opposition party, the Democrats, failed to field a candidate. This left Paul Hounkpè as his only challenger. Hounkpè conceded defeat even before final results were announced, congratulating Wadagni and calling for unity beyond political differences.

Wadagni’s rise to power was also backed by outgoing President Patrice Talon, who could not seek re-election after completing two terms in office.

Benin’s electoral laws require presidential candidates to secure endorsements from elected lawmakers, a condition that prevented the opposition’s preferred candidate from appearing on the ballot. As a result, many observers viewed the election as largely uncontested.

Voter turnout stood at 58.75 percent nationwide.

Despite the decisive win, Wadagni faces significant challenges ahead. The country continues to grapple with rising insecurity, particularly in the northern region, where extremist groups linked to Al-Qaeda have carried out deadly attacks on security forces.

Economic issues, including widespread poverty, also remain a major concern for the incoming administration.

Although Benin is often regarded as one of West Africa’s more stable democracies, the recent security threats and a failed coup attempt months ago highlight the pressures facing the nation as it enters a new political era.
