ADC CONCLUDES CONVENTION, AMENDS CONSTITUTION, RATIFIES MARK-LED NWC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has concluded its national convention in Abuja, where delegates overwhelmingly approved amendments to the party’s constitution.

Announcing the outcome, Emeka Ihedioha disclosed that 1,576 delegates were accredited, with 1,471 voting in favour of the amendments—representing about 94 percent approval. The convention, held at the Rainbow Event Centre, formally ratified the changes.

Before the vote, Olumide Apata led the adoption of resolutions from recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings. These included key adjustments such as waiving certain membership requirements, suspending zoning rules for leadership positions, and removing restrictions on replacing vacant offices based on regional considerations.

A major outcome of the convention was the dissolution of the previous National Working Committee led by Chief Ralph Nwosu, with a new leadership under David Mark taking full control of party affairs.

In his remarks, Mark praised the organisation of the convention, describing it as a turning point for the party. He expressed confidence that the ADC is positioning itself for a strong run toward the 2027 presidential election.

The convention also saw the expulsion of several members, including factional chairman Nafiu Bala and lawmaker Leke Abejide, over alleged anti-party activities. Other individuals affected include Kingsley Temitope, Noman Obinna, Kennedy Odion, Stella Chukwuma, and others accused of creating internal instability.

Meanwhile, prominent political figures used the platform to raise concerns about Nigeria’s governance and democratic processes.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging that the institution is being used to undermine democracy. He warned that efforts would be made to challenge any actions perceived as threats to democratic principles.

Also speaking, Peter Obi raised alarm over Nigeria’s rising debt profile, warning that the country is heading toward economic trouble. He argued that despite the removal of fuel subsidy, borrowing has continued to increase significantly.

Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi expressed concern over worsening insecurity, comparing recent incidents in some communities to civil war-like situations.

Similarly, Rauf Aregbesola criticised the current administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, questioning its effectiveness in addressing economic hardship and insecurity.

Despite the absence of official monitoring by INEC due to a court ruling, the ADC proceeded with its congresses and convention, with party members gathering to endorse key decisions and chart a new direction.
