LAGOS 2027: GAC CHAIRMAN HINTS AT HAMZAT AS SANWO-OLU’S POSSIBLE SUCCESSOR

Ahead of the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, political discussions have intensified following comments by the Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Tajudeen Olusi, which appeared to signal early endorsement dynamics within the ruling party.

The remarks were made during a public event organised by the IBILE Eko Summit Foundation at the MUSON Centre in Onikan, themed “Addressing Urbanisation and Urban Challenges of Lagos State,” where Olusi repeatedly referred to Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the “incoming Governor of Lagos.”

The statement immediately sparked political attention, especially given growing speculation around succession plans for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers noted that the repeated description of Hamzat as a future governor may reflect early elite signalling within Lagos’ political structure, particularly within the All Progressives Congress (APC), where internal consensus often plays a key role in succession decisions.

The presence of former Governor Babatunde Fashola at the event further added to the political interpretation of the gathering, with analysts suggesting that the forum carried undertones beyond its stated theme.

Olusi also emphasized Hamzat’s Lagos heritage, describing him as a “son of the soil,” a remark seen as reinforcing local political identity in the state’s leadership selection process.

The comments have since fueled wider discussions about potential consensus building ahead of the APC’s 2027 gubernatorial primaries in Lagos State, though no official endorsement has been declared by the party.
