The immediate past Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally resigned from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet as he prepares to contest the Oyo State governorship election.
A photograph circulating after his exit showed Adelabu at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, where he submitted his resignation letter.

Sources confirmed that the visit marked the formal completion of his resignation process, which is expected to take effect from April 30.
Adelabu, who was appointed Minister of Power in August 2023 following Senate confirmation, said his decision was driven by his ambition to govern Oyo State and his need to comply fully with electoral laws.
In his resignation letter dated April 22, he stated that stepping down would allow him to focus entirely on his political aspiration.

“My decision to step down is guided by my desire to fully comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act and to focus on my governorship aspiration in Oyo State,” he wrote.
His media aide, Bolaji Tunji, confirmed that Adelabu had earlier discussed his decision with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who reportedly gave his approval and blessing.
In his farewell remarks, Adelabu reflected on his time in office and also made recommendations for the power sector, including the creation of a coordinating minister for energy to improve policy alignment across electricity and gas reforms.
He stressed that sustained progress in the sector would require stronger central coordination to ensure effective implementation of ongoing reforms.
