Senator Tony Nwoye of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been appointed as the new Minority Whip of the Nigerian Senate.
The announcement was made following the resignation of the former Minority Whip, Osita Ngwu, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed the appointment during plenary, noting that Nwoye’s nomination was submitted by the Senate Minority Caucus.
Reports indicate that the ADC has now emerged as the leading opposition party in the Senate, with nine senators, ahead of the PDP which currently has five.
Despite this shift in numbers, the Senate has not made any formal change regarding Senator Abba Moro of the PDP, who continues to serve as Minority Leader.

Political analyst John Oloriegbe observed that the ADC should ordinarily assume full leadership of the minority structure, including the position of Minority Leader, given its current numerical strength.
He, however, noted that any adjustment depends on formal communication and procedures within the Senate.

Meanwhile, the chamber also witnessed further political movements as Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro (PDP, Gombe South) defected to the APC, citing internal party disputes, while Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada (SDP, Nasarawa West) officially notified the Senate of his earlier decision to join the APC.

Wadada explained that his move, made in 2025, was influenced by leadership challenges within his former party.
The latest developments reflect ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber as party dynamics continue to shift.
