AGBALATA MARKET CLOSED AS LAGOS BEGINS BURIAL RITES FOR AKRAN OF BADAGRY

Commercial activities were halted at Agbalata International Market in Badagry on Thursday as Lagos State began funeral rites for the late Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

The revered traditional ruler passed away on January 12, prompting the state government to organise a structured programme of burial ceremonies in his honour, reflecting his long-standing role in the Badagry kingdom.

Lagos State had earlier announced a 10-day burial schedule for the monarch, with activities set to run from April 23 to May 6.

Speaking during a briefing in Badagry on April 18, the Secretary to the State Government, Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, who chairs the Central Planning Committee, said the government was committed to giving the late monarch a befitting farewell under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

She explained that the ceremonies were designed to properly honour the traditional ruler and reflect his contributions to the cultural heritage of the state.

Ahead of the commencement of the rites, a town crier moved through markets and residential areas on Wednesday to announce the closure of Agbalata Market and inform residents about the funeral arrangements.

By Thursday, shops and stalls at the usually busy market remained closed, leaving the commercial hub largely deserted as residents observed the traditional rites.

A community leader, Chief Tunde Giro, the Depegan of Badagry, said the market would resume operations on Friday after the initial phase of the ceremonies, noting that closures would only occur during key traditional events due to the market’s importance to the local economy and surrounding regions.

Meanwhile, burial activities have commenced at the palace, with traditional “Ajogan” cultural displays performed across the eight quarters of Badagry.

Religious observances are also ongoing, with Christian, Muslim, and traditional worshippers offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the late monarch as funeral activities continue.ULTURE
