The attack occurred on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton hotel, where gunfire broke out inside the venue shortly after the event began, triggering an emergency evacuation of guests, including top US government officials.

US law enforcement confirmed that the suspected gunman, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California, was arrested at the scene. Authorities say he was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives, and is expected to face federal charges.

Investigators stated that early evidence suggests the suspect intended to target senior members of the Trump administration. Officials also revealed that a document described as a manifesto contained references to a list of intended targets and criticisms of government figures.

Security officials, including Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, said the suspect was believed to have been staying at the hotel and was quickly confronted after rushing security personnel in the lobby area.

The incident has prompted global concern, with multiple world leaders condemning the attack and warning against rising political violence.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said any attack on democratic institutions and press freedom must be condemned, while also confirming coordination ahead of an upcoming royal visit to the United States.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the attack as unacceptable, stressing that violence has no place in democratic societies, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and other global leaders echoed similar sentiments of shock and relief.

King Charles III also expressed relief that those involved were safe, as preparations continue for a scheduled state visit to the US.

Other leaders, including those from India, Italy, Israel, Spain, Turkey, and the European Union, also issued statements condemning the attack and praising emergency responders for their swift action in preventing further harm.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing as federal prosecutors prepare formal charges against the suspect.
