KING CHARLES ARRIVES US FOR HIGH-STAKES MEETING WITH TRUMP, SET TO ADDRESS CONGRESS

King Charles III touched down in Washington on Monday for a crucial state visit aimed at mending strained ties with Donald Trump, as security concerns linger following a recent attack at an event attended by the American leader.

The British monarch, accompanied by Queen Camilla, is on a four-day trip seen as an effort to stabilise the long-standing US-UK alliance, often referred to as the “special relationship.” That bond has come under pressure in recent months, largely due to disagreements over the ongoing Iran conflict.

The royal couple arrived at Joint Base Andrews aboard a plane bearing the Union Jack and were received by the UK’s ambassador to the U.S., Christian Turner, alongside White House officials.

This marks Charles’s first visit to the United States since becoming king in 2022, and it coincides with activities marking America’s 250th anniversary of independence from Britain.

Despite the tensions, the White House has played up the importance of the visit. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said it would “honour the long-standing and special relationship” between both nations.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are expected to host the royals, starting with a tea reception and White House tour, followed by an Oval Office meeting and a formal state dinner.

In what is set to be a historic moment, Charles will also address the U.S. Congress—becoming the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II delivered a similar speech in 1991.

However, the visit comes against a backdrop of political strain. Trump has openly criticised British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his stance on the Iran war, even dismissing him as “no Churchill,” referencing wartime leader Winston Churchill.

Security has also been tightened following a recent shooting incident at a high-profile White House event. Buckingham Palace confirmed that Charles was relieved the president and other guests were unharmed, while officials from both countries say extensive measures are in place to ensure safety during the visit.

Despite the political undertones, Trump struck a friendly tone ahead of the monarch’s arrival, describing Charles as a longtime friend and praising his representation of Britain.

Beyond Washington, the King’s itinerary includes a visit to New York—where he will tour the September 11 memorial—before heading to Bermuda, marking his first trip to a British overseas territory as monarch.

Observers say the visit will test Charles’s diplomatic skill, as he navigates ceremonial duties alongside sensitive geopolitical issues. His address to Congress is expected to subtly touch on the Iran conflict, widely seen as the “elephant in the room.”

In the end, the trip is being viewed as both a symbolic reaffirmation of historic ties and a delicate mission to steady relations at a time when they are being tested.
