Nigerian author and filmmaker Onyeka Nwelue has expressed deep appreciation to Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka for supporting his move to Japan with a personal recommendation letter.
Nwelue shared the letter on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Monday, describing Soyinka as “the greatest literary mind in Africa” and thanking him for standing as his guarantor during his residency application process.
“With the support of the greatest literary mind in Africa, I have become a resident of the greatest nation on earth, Japan,” he wrote. “I remain indebted to this man till my last day on earth.”

In the letter, Soyinka introduced Nwelue as “a bona fide visitor to Japan in promotion of his artistic preoccupations,” while assuring authorities that he would take responsibility for his conduct during his stay.
“I stand guarantor for his stated mission in Japan, and his compliance with Japanese laws and socio-cultural norms,” Soyinka stated.
The celebrated playwright also highlighted his professional relationship with Nwelue, describing him as a responsible and committed creative. He noted that their past collaborations gave him confidence in Nwelue’s character and purpose.

Soyinka further emphasised the cultural value of the visit, stating that Nwelue’s presence in Japan would help strengthen artistic and intellectual exchange between both countries, especially among younger writers and creatives.
Referencing his own longstanding connection with Japan, where his works are studied in several institutions, Soyinka expressed optimism that Nwelue’s residency would deepen existing cultural ties and promote mutual understanding through the arts.
The endorsement underscores the continued influence of established literary figures in supporting emerging voices and fostering global cultural collaboration.
