Fresh allegations have surfaced against the Obi of Ogwashi-Ukwu Kingdom in Delta State, Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo, amid claims of land disputes, intimidation of critics, and alleged misuse of security agencies within the community.

The monarch, who is the brother of World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been accused by some community members of using influence to target opponents and facilitate controversial land transactions, allegations he has previously denied or that have been contested in court proceedings.

The controversy is unfolding alongside the arrest and remand of activist Victor Ojei, also known as Wong Box, by the Federal High Court in Asaba over alleged cyberstalking and defamation linked to comments about the traditional ruler.

According to court proceedings, Justice F. A. Olubanjo ordered Ojei’s remand after he was arraigned on charges bordering on alleged criminal defamation and cyberbullying involving social media publications deemed offensive to the monarch.

Community sources have also accused the monarch of leveraging political connections to suppress dissent and push land-related dealings, claims which remain allegations and have not been fully substantiated in court.

Over time, various petitions and reports from community groups have alleged incidents ranging from land disputes to destruction of farmland and contested ownership claims, with tensions prompting reported involvement of state security stakeholders to manage the situation.
