XI’S DOUBLE ACT: PUTIN ARRIVES IN CHINA DAYS AFTER TRUMP’S DEPARTURE

Putin Arrives in Beijing as China Deepens Diplomatic Balancing Act After Trump Visit

Beijing was once again at the centre of global diplomacy on Tuesday as Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived for a state visit to China, just days after US President Donald Trump was hosted with full honours by Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Putin’s visit, his 25th to China since becoming president, is being seen as a carefully staged show of the growing alignment between Beijing and Moscow at a time of heightened global tensions.

A carefully timed diplomatic message

Xi’s back-to-back meetings with two of the world’s most powerful — and politically contrasting — leaders underline China’s increasingly central role in global geopolitics.

While Trump’s visit last week highlighted ongoing tensions and negotiations involving Washington, Putin’s arrival signals Beijing’s continued close partnership with Moscow amid the war in Ukraine and wider friction with the West.

Both China and Russia have been navigating strained relations with the United States, while also positioning themselves in ongoing global crises, including the US-Iran tensions that have affected global energy markets.

“Unprecedented” China–Russia ties

Ahead of the visit, Putin described relations between Russia and China as having reached an “unprecedented level,” stressing mutual support on issues he described as core national interests, including sovereignty and territorial unity.

Over the years, Xi and Putin have built a close personal and political relationship, meeting more than 40 times and frequently referring to each other as long-standing friends. Their governments have expanded cooperation in trade, security, and international diplomacy, often presenting a united front against what they describe as Western dominance.

Pomp and symbolism in Beijing

Putin was received in Beijing with full ceremonial honours, including a red carpet welcome, military band, and a group of young supporters chanting greetings at the airport.

Chinese state media also emphasised the strength of the bilateral relationship, describing it as “unshakable” amid global uncertainty.

China’s growing diplomatic positioning

Analysts say the near-simultaneous visits by Trump and Putin highlight China’s evolving role as a key global power broker, capable of engaging rival world leaders within days of each other.

Beijing has increasingly projected itself as a stabilising force in a turbulent international system, using high-profile diplomatic engagements to reinforce its image as an alternative centre of global influence.

As global conflicts continue to reshape alliances, China’s hosting of both leaders underscores its strategic balancing act between competing powers — and its ambition to remain at the centre of global diplomacy.
