The announcement was contained in a statement released on Wednesday, May 20, 2025, where he explained that the decision followed extensive consultations with family, associates, and supporters.

According to him, leadership sometimes requires placing collective interest above personal ambition, stressing that Rivers State must remain the priority above individual political aspirations.

He expressed appreciation to his supporters for their loyalty and sacrifices throughout the process, noting that his decision was guided by what he described as the greater good of the state. He also acknowledged the emotional impact the withdrawal may have on his backers.

Fubara added that his earlier silence was intentional and based on strategic considerations aimed at preserving peace and avoiding escalation of political tensions.

Using a traditional expression, he suggested that not all sensitive matters are openly discussed, indicating that he faced significant pressure during the period leading to his decision.

He further thanked the All Progressives Congress for providing him a platform and also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for support and encouragement during the process.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Rivers State and urged party members to remain united as the APC continues its political preparations ahead of the governorship race.
