President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved certification and compliance processes for five proposed deep seaport projects across Nigeria, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s maritime infrastructure and recovering a large share of cargo currently diverted to other African ports.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, made the disclosure during the 2026 graduation ceremony of 492 newly trained advanced combat personnel and the presentation of the Deep Blue Project Task Group in Elele.
He explained that the federal government’s approval is intended to speed up regulatory processes for the development of modern deep seaports that can accommodate larger vessels, ease congestion at existing ports, and enhance international trade efficiency.
According to him, the initiative is expected to help Nigeria reclaim over 70 percent of cargo meant for the country but currently routed through neighbouring nations due to infrastructure gaps, congestion, and delays at existing seaports.
Stakeholders say the new ports could significantly boost Nigeria’s blue economy, improve cargo handling and customs operations, attract foreign investment, and generate employment across maritime and logistics sectors.
The minister also noted that the projects align with efforts to reduce pressure on Lagos ports while opening up new economic corridors in coastal states. He added that modern deep seaports are essential for accommodating larger global shipping vessels and positioning Nigeria for increased trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The approved projects include the Lagos Badagry Deep Sea Port, Olokola Deep Sea Port in Ondo State, Ibom Deep Sea Port, Bakassi Deep Sea Port in Cross River State, and the Bonny Deep Sea Port in Rivers State.
