The United Kingdom could soon relax its work visa requirements for foreign professionals, including Nigerians, if proposed reforms from the independent Migration Advisory Committee are approved.

The recommendations focus mainly on adjusting salary thresholds across several immigration pathways. The aim is to ease ongoing labour shortages while still maintaining fair wage standards in the UK labour market, according to reports.
If implemented, the changes could significantly improve access to UK job opportunities for skilled workers from countries such as Nigeria and India, particularly in high-demand sectors.

A key proposal from the committee is to lower occupation-specific salary requirements under the Skilled Worker visa route. Instead of using the current median earnings benchmark, salaries would be based on the 25th percentile of pay for each role. This would effectively reduce the minimum salary many employers must offer.
Despite this adjustment, the committee suggested keeping the general salary threshold at £41,700, while also presenting a higher alternative figure of £48,400 for government review.

The reforms are expected to benefit sectors experiencing workforce shortages, including information technology, engineering, healthcare, construction, and education.
For new entrants under the Skilled Worker visa route, the committee proposed a unified lower threshold of £33,400, making it easier for younger professionals and recent graduates to secure employment opportunities.
Another recommendation includes removing current salary discounts for PhD holders, replacing them with a standard threshold of £41,700 for eligible postdoctoral roles for up to four years.

The proposals also extend to the Global Business Mobility visa routes used by multinational companies. For senior and specialist staff, salary requirements would align with median earnings, while graduate trainees would also fall under the £33,400 threshold without occupation-specific variations.
Additionally, a minimum salary level of £30,900 was suggested for roles listed under the Temporary Shortage List, alongside continued adherence to prevailing market pay rates.
The proposed adjustments come amid recent increases in UK visa application fees across multiple categories, including visit, study, transit, and family visas, reflecting broader changes in the country’s immigration cost structure.
