The incident occurred on Friday during a Democracy Day demonstration organised to draw attention to growing insecurity, economic difficulties and concerns over governance in the country.

The protest attracted several activists and members of civil society organisations who gathered to voice their grievances and call for urgent government action on key national issues.

Tension escalated when security personnel moved to disperse the gathering, leading to a chaotic situation at the venue. Witnesses said teargas was deployed, causing many protesters to flee the area in search of safety.

Amid the confusion, Sowore was reportedly affected by the teargas fumes and subsequently lost consciousness.

Fellow protesters and supporters quickly came to his assistance and evacuated him from the scene. Sources indicated that he regained consciousness while being transported away from the protest location.

He was later taken to a medical facility for further evaluation and treatment.

The incident sparked criticism from demonstrators, who condemned the actions of the security operatives and maintained their calls for urgent measures to address insecurity, economic hardship and governance concerns across the country.
