POLITICAL COMEBACK: IYABO OBASANJO RETURNS TO PDP, CLINCHES OGUN CENTRAL SENATE TICKET

Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC) last week.

Her return was formalised on Wednesday at a colourful event held at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta, where party leaders welcomed her back and presented her with the party flag, affirming her as the PDP senatorial candidate for Ogun Central ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The ceremony attracted a large crowd, with a procession earlier held through major parts of Abeokuta, led by the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, alongside supporters and party members from across the state.

Speaking at the event, the state PDP chairman, Dr Abayomi Tella, announced her nomination, stating that the party leadership had endorsed her as its standard bearer for the senatorial contest in Ogun Central.

Senator Obasanjo took the party oath, pledging loyalty to the PDP and committing to serve the people of Ogun State and Nigeria with integrity, dedication and a focus on public welfare.

She explained that her decision to leave the APC was influenced by what she described as disrespect, betrayal and unfair treatment within the ruling party.

Obasanjo, who turns 60 next year, said she felt undermined by the party’s internal dynamics, despite her initial decision to join the APC based on her personal respect for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

She recalled that she was drawn to the APC due to the cordial relationship she experienced with the President, noting that she initially believed the party would provide a suitable platform for her political participation.

However, she said her experience within the party led to her decision to defect back to the PDP, where she has now resumed her political career.

The development marks a notable shift in the political landscape of Ogun State as preparations begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
