President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate and permanent strengthening of security at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, following a recent bandit attack that left two soldiers and a police officer dead.
The directive was conveyed on Friday by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a visit to participants of Senior Executive Course 48 at the institute.
Shettima said the President ordered the activation of emergency security measures at NIPSS, describing the institution as a critical national strategic centre that must be fully protected from future attacks.
He explained that the Director-General of NIPSS has been instructed to work closely with the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately reinforce the facility’s perimeter security.
According to him, a detailed security action plan covering surveillance systems, personnel deployment, access control, and emergency response structures must be submitted to the Vice President’s office within 72 hours, followed by weekly progress reports until full implementation is achieved.
The Vice President said the attack, though tragic, would not weaken the government’s resolve to protect strategic national institutions.
He expressed condolences to the families of the slain soldiers and police officer, as well as to the armed forces and police authorities, describing the fallen personnel as heroes who paid the ultimate price.
Shettima also praised participants of the senior executive programme for their composure during the attack, saying their response demonstrated discipline and resilience under pressure.
He commended the leadership of NIPSS Director-General, Ayo Omotayo, for swiftly coordinating with security agencies to secure the facility and ensure the safety of all participants and staff.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who also spoke at the event, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its swift response and support following the incident.
He announced approval for additional protective measures around the institute, including the creation of a buffer zone and installation of security lighting to strengthen safety.
Omotayo, in his presentation, called for enhanced surveillance infrastructure, including CCTV coverage and increased security deployment to further protect the institution.
Representatives of the course participants said they remained committed to completing the programme, expressing confidence in the renewed security arrangements.
