NATIONAL SECURITY: FED GOVT TO INTRODUCE ALPHANUMERIC POSTCODE

The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a Nigerian Digital Postcode Initiative aimed at strengthening national security, improving public safety, and enhancing coordination among government institutions.

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) disclosed the plan at a stakeholders’ session in Abuja on the operationalisation of the digital postcode system for national security and public safety.

The initiative, organised by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, is designed to create an alphanumeric addressing system that will improve the identification and location of persons, places, and incidents across the country.

Speaking at the event, the National Coordinator of the Counter Terrorism Centre, Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, said the adoption of innovative technology is essential to addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

He explained that a reliable digital addressing system would significantly improve policing, intelligence gathering, emergency response, disaster management, border security, and financial crime investigations.

Laka added that the initiative would strengthen decision-making and response times by enabling accurate location tracking and better coordination among security agencies.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, described effective addressing as a critical foundation for national development, noting that the absence of a standardized system has long been a structural challenge.

He said the digital postcode system would eliminate ambiguities in location identification, enhance emergency response, and complement ongoing investments in digital infrastructure such as the national fibre-optic backbone expansion.

Tijani also noted that Nigeria already has strong digital identity and payment systems but lacks a comprehensive geospatial framework needed for accurate physical addressing nationwide.

He said the new system would serve as essential infrastructure for governance, commerce, and security, benefiting agencies such as the police, DSS, immigration, EFCC, ICPC, and customs.

In addition, the Federal Government unveiled plans for a Smart National Transport Data Bank (SNTDB), which will track road, rail, air, maritime, and pipeline transportation activities in real time.

The project will be implemented by the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) in partnership with Asia Arab Investment Nigeria Ltd under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement.

According to officials, the system will support transport planning, safety management, traffic monitoring, and infrastructure development by providing reliable and real-time mobility data.

Former FRSC Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, said the transport databank would address long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s transport sector, including fragmented data systems, weak coordination, and revenue leakages.

He said the platform would enable real-time traffic analysis, accident tracking, cargo monitoring, and evidence-based infrastructure planning.

The Director-General of NITT, Bayero Farah, said the first phase of the project would focus on road transport, with pilot schemes planned for Kaduna, Lagos, Nasarawa, Borno, Enugu, Edo, and the Federal Capital Territory.

Other transport sectors, including maritime, aviation, and rail, are expected to be integrated in later phases to create a unified national mobility intelligence system.

Stakeholders at the event said the initiatives mark a shift toward proactive governance, where technology is used to anticipate challenges and improve national planning, security response, and economic efficiency.
