The United States has confirmed that certain foreign nationals can enter legally without a visa and, in some cases, without a conventional passport, provided they present specific documents recognised by border authorities.
Canadian citizens benefit from a special arrangement for entry into the United States. Unlike most foreign nationals, they do not require a tourist or business visa for short visits and, when entering by land or sea, may use documents other than a passport.

The documents accepted under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) include:
– Enhanced Driver’s License
– Enhanced Identification Card
– NEXUS Card
– FAST/EXPRES Card
– SENTRI Enrollment Card

These documents satisfy border requirements and allow easier entry without additional procedures.
However, the exemption does not apply to citizens of other countries, permanent residents of Canada who are not Canadian citizens, travellers entering by air without a passport, or individuals with immigration or criminal records that may restrict entry.

The special arrangement applies only to eligible Canadian citizens and recognised travel documents approved by U.S. border authorities.
