FRESH BLOW TO APC AS KEBBI SENATOR DEFECTS TO ADC

The Senator representing Kebbi South, Garba Maidoki, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing unresolved internal disputes linked to the party’s recent primaries in Kebbi State.

Maidoki, who also serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, announced his defection in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The letter was read during plenary on Tuesday.

The lawmaker said his decision followed wide consultations with his constituents, explaining that persistent internal crises within the APC in Kebbi State influenced his move.

He specifically pointed to tensions arising from the party’s primary elections, which he said left several grievances unresolved. According to him, the new alignment reflects the political interests of his district.

During the session, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau appealed to him to reconsider, describing the situation as a party matter that could still be resolved through reconciliation efforts within the APC.

However, Maidoki maintained his position and declined the appeal, insisting that his decision to leave the ruling party was final.

The development follows his earlier resignation from the APC in May 2026, ahead of the party’s senatorial primary in Kebbi State.

His defection adds to a growing wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, driven largely by disputes over party primaries and internal disagreements within major political parties.
