The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has unveiled the list of candidates shortlisted for the 2026 conferment of the prestigious Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) rank.
A total of 89 candidates made the shortlist, comprising 77 legal practitioners in the advocacy category and 12 academics drawn from various institutions across the country.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the LPPC Secretary and Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi. According to the committee, the candidates successfully progressed through multiple stages of the screening process, including filtration exercises, qualification assessments, appeals reviews, and chambers inspections.
The committee explained that the publication of the shortlist marks the beginning of the final phase of the selection process, which will culminate in interviews for eligible candidates.
However, the LPPC emphasized that inclusion on the shortlist does not automatically guarantee the award of the SAN title. It noted that all shortlisted candidates would still be subjected to further assessment before final decisions are made.

As part of the process, the committee invited members of the public to provide feedback on the integrity, professional conduct, competence, and reputation of the shortlisted candidates.
Interested individuals were asked to submit any comments, observations, or complaints to the office of the LPPC Secretary at the Supreme Court in Abuja before the stipulated deadline. The committee added that any adverse petition must be supported by a sworn affidavit and submitted in the required format.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria rank remains the highest professional distinction awarded to legal practitioners and legal scholars in the country. The honour is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to legal practice, legal education, advocacy, and the advancement of jurisprudence in Nigeria.

The final list of successful candidates is expected to emerge after the completion of the remaining stages of the selection exercise.
