Residents in several parts of Lagos have expressed frustration over the prolonged delay in refuse collection, saying heaps of uncollected waste have turned their neighbourhoods into health hazards and sources of discomfort.
The residents lamented that despite paying waste management fees, refuse has remained unattended for more than a week in many communities, leaving streets, drainage channels and collection points overflowing with garbage. They said the situation has led to offensive odours, increased fly infestation and fears of disease outbreaks.
Speaking on the development, some residents accused waste collection operators of failing to maintain a regular evacuation schedule. They noted that the accumulation of refuse has affected both residential and commercial activities, with business owners complaining that the unpleasant environment is driving customers away.
According to residents, the delay has become a recurring problem, especially in densely populated areas where waste is generated daily. Some said they have repeatedly reported the issue to the relevant authorities without receiving a satisfactory response.
Environmental experts warn that prolonged refuse accumulation could block drainage systems, worsen flooding during heavy rainfall and expose residents to various health risks. They urged waste management agencies and private operators to improve their operations and ensure timely collection of waste.
Residents have called on the Lagos State Government and waste management authorities to urgently intervene and clear the growing heaps of refuse before the situation escalates into a major public health concern. They also appealed for a sustainable solution to the recurring waste collection challenges facing many communities across the state.
