A disturbing video circulating on social media has shown several young children believed to have been abducted by armed bandits crying while being held in captivity.
The footage shows the toddlers lying on a bare floor in what appears to be poor condition, with the children looking visibly malnourished as they cried.
As of the time of this report, the exact location where the children are being held and the state from which they were abducted have not been confirmed.
In a separate development, another viral video showed armed bandits displaying large sums of cash allegedly obtained through ransom payments, raising fresh concerns over the growing kidnapping crisis in Nigeria.
The footage was shared by conflict and security journalist Bakatsine, who described it as showing money reportedly collected from victims’ families during ransom negotiations.
The videos have renewed public concern over the continued rise of kidnapping-for-ransom, particularly across the North-West and parts of the North-Central, where criminal groups have repeatedly targeted communities, motorists, schools and farmers.
Security experts have warned that ransom payments often provide criminal gangs with the financial resources needed to acquire weapons, recruit more fighters and sustain their operations.
In recent years, kidnapping incidents have also spread to several southern states, with residents and travellers increasingly becoming targets of abduction. In some cases, victims have reportedly been killed despite the payment of ransom.
The emergence of the latest videos has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger security operations, improved intelligence gathering and coordinated efforts to dismantle criminal networks responsible for kidnappings across the country.
