*The Book of the Sick – Kitab al-Mardha*
Narrated Khalid bin Sa`d:
We went out and Ghalib bin Abjar was accompanying us. He fell ill on the way and when we arrived at Madinah he was still sick. Ibn Abi ‘Atiq came to visit him and said to us, “Treat him with Al-Habbatu as-Sawdaa (black cumin). Take five or seven seeds and crush them (mix the powder with oil) and drop the resulting mixture into both nostrils, for `A’ishah has narrated to me that she heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, *’This Al-Habbatu as-Sawdaa (black cumin) is healing for all diseases except As-Sam.’* ‘A’ishah said, ‘What is As-Sam?’ He said, *’Death.”*

Sahih al-Bukhari 5687
*NOTE 📝*
1. In his commentary of this hadith, al-Hafidh Hajar al-Asqalani discusses the Prophet’s ﷺ statement: *“Use al-Habbatu as-Sawdaa (the black cumin seed), for indeed it contains a cure for every disease except death.”* Ibn Hajar then stated that the narration was transmitted through authentic chains and related that Abu Bakr ibn Abi ‘Atiq recommended black seed based on what he had heard from ʿA’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). When asked about “al-sam,” he explained that it refers to death, indicating that while Allah has created remedies for illnesses, death itself is inevitable and has no cure. – Fathul Baari, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani
2. Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar further explained that the hadith should not be understood to mean that black seed is always used in the same way or as the sole treatment for every illness. Rather, it may be used on its own or combined with other remedies, taken orally, inhaled, applied externally, or prepared in different forms depending on the nature of the illness. Classical physicians described numerous medicinal benefits of black seed, particularly for ailments associated with cold or moist temperaments, while scholars also noted that its effectiveness varies according to the disease, the patient’s condition, and the proper method of application. – Fathul Baari, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani

3. Finally, al-Hafidh stated that the scholars differed slightly in explaining the phrase *“a cure for every disease.”* Some understood it as referring to diseases for which black seed is suitable, while others held that the statement should be accepted as it stands, trusting the truthful words of the Prophet ﷺ above human experience. Ibn Hajar then reconciled these views by explaining that the hadith is general in meaning, with black seed serving as a beneficial remedy through various methods of use, while maintaining that all healing ultimately comes from Allah alone, and that medicines are merely means created by Him. – Fathul Baari, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani
*O Allah, we ask You (for safety from trials and) well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, we ask You for forgiveness and well-being in our religion, our worldly affairs, our family, and our wealth. O Allah, conceal our faults and protect our vulnerabilities. Indeed, You are All-Hearing, Ever-Responsive. Ãmeen*
I pray that Almighty Allah destined steadfastness in all your affairs, victorious in your daily endeavours and may He beautify you with highest integrity. May Allah make things easier for you and bless you beyond human limitations. May He continue to protect you from all forms of evils and distance you from undesirable company. May the light of Allah surround you, may His love enfold you and His presence watches over you always. Jumma’at Mubarak.
