The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially transferred a temporary National Control Centre in Abuja to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to enhance electricity grid management and improve the reliability of power supply across the country.
The facility, located at the Gwagwalada 330kV Transmission Substation, is equipped with the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) and telecommunications infrastructure required for real-time monitoring and operation of the national electricity grid.

According to a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the handover took place on June 30 and the facility will serve as NISO’s temporary operational headquarters until the permanent National Control Centre in Gwagwalada is completed.
Speaking during the ceremony, TCN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sule Abdulaziz, described the project as a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s electricity transmission network.

Represented by the General Manager of Project Coordination, Amini Tahir, Abdulaziz said the new facility marks the beginning of a new phase in the management and operation of the national grid.
He explained that the building was initially developed to accommodate the newly acquired SCADA/EMS and telecommunications systems, alongside operational personnel, but will now provide NISO with a temporary base for overseeing grid operations more efficiently until the permanent control centre becomes operational.
Abdulaziz said NISO would assume full responsibility for operating and maintaining the facility, expressing confidence that the arrangement would contribute to improved grid stability, greater system reliability, and better electricity services for Nigerians.

He also acknowledged the support of the World Bank in delivering the project and reaffirmed TCN’s commitment to promoting innovation and collaboration within the country’s power sector.
On behalf of NISO, the organisation’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abdu Mohammed Bello, represented by General Manager of System Planning, Kabir Adamu, described the handover as an important milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s electricity grid.

He noted that the SCADA/EMS facility provides the operational environment needed to begin the effective deployment of the project and pledged that NISO would ensure the facility is properly managed to support efficient grid operations.
TCN Project Manager, Samuel Fakinlade, added that once the permanent National Control Centre is completed, the equipment and personnel currently operating from the temporary facility will be relocated, after which the building will be returned to TCN.
