The Federal Government’s decision to rename the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has added to the growing number of public assets and institutions that have been named in his honour since he became president in May 2023.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the renaming of the 750-kilometre highway on Thursday, explaining that the project was named after Tinubu because the idea was first conceived during his time as Governor of Lagos State nearly three decades ago

Umahi said the coastal highway represents a vision that began about 27 years ago, before Tinubu assumed the presidency.

The highway, which is one of the major infrastructure projects of the current administration, is now the latest addition to a list of public facilities, roads, and institutions carrying the President’s name.

Among the facilities renamed or established in Tinubu’s honour is the international airport in Minna, Niger State, which was renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in March 2024 by Governor Umar Bago.

In May 2024, the Abuja Southern Parkway was renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way by the Federal Capital Territory Administration after the road underwent reconstruction.

The National Assembly also named its newly completed library in Abuja after the President in 2024, following the completion of the facility, which was initiated during the previous assembly.

In December 2024, the Nigeria Immigration Service renamed its command and control centre the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC), describing it as a major facility for border security, migration management, and technological development.

The Federal Government later approved the establishment of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, Abuja, in January 2025, with the aim of providing technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial education.

The Nigerian Army also named a newly completed barracks in Asokoro after Tinubu in January 2025, saying the move was to recognise his contributions and provide honour where it was considered deserved.

In June 2025, the Abuja International Conference Centre was renamed the Tinubu International Conference Centre after renovation work was completed on the facility.

With the addition of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the number of major public projects and institutions named after President Tinubu since he assumed office has increased further, highlighting the growing recognition of his administration’s projects and political legacy.
